DOS PUEBLOS THEATRE COMPANY’S MISSION
What is the Dos Pueblos Theatre Company’s unique “brand” when it comes to producing theater?
Student centered, creative, transformational and spontaneous “in the moment” performances.
What do you mean “student-centered?”
DP’s Theater students have multiple opportunities to create a wide variety of theatrical experiences for themselves and others. These include:
• Haunted House - a fully immersive audience experience
• Holiday Package - a S & L type sketch comedy show
• Student Directed Musical - a “traditional” musical theater piece chosen & directed by Seniors
• Open Mic Nites - an intimate coffee-house talent show entertainment
• Student films/One-acts - these student written projects are often done in collaboration with a professional theater
company (most recently Ensemble Theatre)
Each year a new group of between 14-16 appointed and elected students form Dos Pueblos Theater Company (DPTC.) As a group, DPTC leaders approve the theater’s budget and serve in an advisory capacity in selection of shows.
Through offering topics, guests and plays from a wide variety of perspectives and outreaching to underserved communities, DPTC promotes diversity and inclusiveness so ALL students feel honored and welcomed.
What do you mean “creative?”
As a Disney/MTI National PIlot High School, DPTC is known for its unique “take,” regardless of how “traditional” the show may be. Students are encouraged to be “co-creators” in the rehearsal process including: character, design, staging, presentation and promotion. Examples abound in production photos of past shows. The number one skill needed to succeed in a rapidly changing, unknown future is creativity. Most theater students do not wisn to pursue careers in theater or entertainment after high school. But, no matter what field they enter, students will need to harness their creativity. Even those who do go on in entertainment will have to find creative ways to stand out.
What do you mean “transformational?”
DPTC seeks not only to entertain audiences, but also to transform their thinking and feelings about topics. In addition to highlighting critical and relevant themes important in moving us forward as a community and nation, DPTC also provokes audiences to challenge its assumptions about how theater can be presented. Last year’s Digital Age Stage, Spamalot and Pippin were examples of this, utilizing ZOOM, drive-in movie style and mixed ZOOM & LIVE. DPTC’s goal is for audiences to come away from their experience changed in some way.
What do you mean “spontaneous” or “in the moment?”
Utilizing a Meisner-esque approach, actors are encouraged to be active listeners and “do-ers” onstage. If you see one performance at Dos Pueblos, you can rest assured that the following night’s show will be different. Actors are encouraged to not just “say their lines” or deliver a perfect “canned” performance. Rather a bit messy around the edges and fresh, than predictable and lifeless. Audiences and actors live the discovery of each new moment together.
What does DPTC’s motto “Dare. Trust. Risk. Create.” really mean?
Essentially what it means is that DPTC students’ and staffs’ first priority is maintaining a safe environment where artists are not afraid to fail. “Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” - Robert F. Kennedy.
